Chapter Twenty-One

I showered and changed clothes when Sam left. Mother Maisie got me up so early, I still had a couple hours to sleep. Juliana climbed into bed with me sometime later. It was something she’d done for years. I pretended she didn’t wake me up but she knew better.

Juliana always smelled of coconut oil in the mornings, like she bathed in it the night before. She slathered the oil in her hair to “make it behave.” I wanted to see it wild. I wanted to see Juliana wild. She was far too reserved.

“I saw Sam leaving your cabin,” she said. “Everything okay?”

“Yeah.” I turned to face her and snuggled in. She hated it but in principle only. She always let me do it. “He said he wanted to define our relationship. He said you and Logan are practically married.”

Juliana paused and rearranged my blankets so she was covered with the good one. “Well, did you define your relationship?”

“Are you practically engaged?”

“The sun is hardly up yet. Are we really having this talk now?”

“Now is the perfect time to have this talk.”

She sighed and stole all the covers. “I don’t know. He didn’t ask or anything, but we’re in love and I don’t see a reason not to marry him.”

I didn’t either. Logan was nice, much nicer than Sam, and smart. He had a good head on his shoulders and always kept his temper in check. But that was Atlantica thinking. Drylander thinking would say, “dream bigger.”

“Just because he’s the best option on the boat doesn’t mean he’s your only option.”

“Right. How was your one and only night off boat?”

I sighed like I was in a movie. “Magical.”

“Based on your ‘only option’ comment, I’m guessing your drylander option is the man of your dreams.”

I buried my face in my too-soft pillow. “I’m seeing him again.”

“Nixie, what are you doing? You live here. You’re part of Atlantica, you’re Atlas’s daughter, and you’re going to get caught. Or worse.”

I didn’t have the heart to tell her “or worse” had already happened. “Calm down. He’s coming here tomorrow.”

“So, you’re still not over this?”

“No. If anything, it’s worse. I told Sam it’s over and everything.”

“I don’t know what to say. I’m actually at a loss for words.”

“Well, find some words to tell me about what was happening last night.”

She turned her back to me and pulled the covers over her head. “I’m not as good of a spy as you.”

“But? Tell me you overheard something.”

“Marsha and the others were having a meeting while your parents were fighting.”

“Juliana.” I pinched her side. It barely got to her through the covers. She elbowed me in return. “When were you going to tell me? What were they talking about?”

Her nostrils flared and her forehead wrinkled. “It’s pretty hard to talk to someone who isn’t on the boat, Nixie.”

I took a deep breath. It wasn’t her fault I was missing Atlantica things for the first time in my life. Until yesterday the boat was my whole life. Leaving it was better than I imagined but I didn’t foresee feeling like I was being left out.
